York College

York College of The City University of New York is one of several senior colleges that you can visit with your Queens car rental as part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. York College is located in Jamaica, Queens and was the first college founded under the CUNY system which created a single public university system. York College has more than 6000 students and is one of the leading general purpose liberal arts colleges. They grant bachelor's degrees in more than 40 fields, as well as a BS/MS degree in Occupational Therapy.

School history

When you are here with your Queens rental car, you may learn that the school was opened in the fall of 1967 with 371 students. The school originally opened in Bayside, but moved to Jamaica in 1971. The school has a majority population of black students, but is not historically a black college. They are a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which grants scholarships to participating schools.

There are more than 260,000 degree-credit students here and 273,000 continuing and professional education students that attend classes across the city.

City University of New York history

In 1926, the growth in the population of the city required a Board of Higher Education of the City of New York to be formed to integrate, coordinate, and expand the city's higher level education, but it wasn't until 1961 that City University of New York formally came into existence by Governor Rockefeller. City University of New York has historically served a diverse student body, particularly those who could not afford to go to private institutions. In fact, until 1974, there was no tuition charged for students and at the time there were many Jewish academics that taught here because they were not allowed to teach at Ivy League schools. The schools have an excellent reputation for their teaching and the students that graduate.
