A look in the past
On February 9, 1893, the Yonkers Public Library was chartered by the State of New York. Between 1883 and 1904, the library was home to various sites. In 1990, a committee was formed by Mayor Leslie Sutherland, writer John Kendrick Bangs, and educator Charles E. Gorton to request fund for the construction for a permanent library building from Andrew Carnegie.
Early beginnings
In March 1901, Carnegie responded with a donation of $50, 000 and an additional $5, 000 for building maintenance given annually. Although several sites were proposed for the Yonkers Building Library, including the corner of Washington Park the corner of South Broadway and Nepperhan Terrace was chosen. Designed by Edwin A. Quick and H. Lansing Quick, and constructed by Lynch and Larkin, all Yonkers locals, the library building officially opened on July 8, 1904. The Yonkers Public Library soon expanded into two branch libraries including one in the Armour Villa Park neighborhood and another in the Crestwood neighborhood. Beginning in 1930, the Yonkers Public Library also began bookmobile services to outlying areas in Yonkers.
A new home
For almost 80 years, the Carnegie building served as the Yonkers Public Libraries main branch. However, due to the decision to expand Nepperhan Avenue into an arterial, the building was closed down and demolished in May of 1982. The main library branch than moved its quarters to the former Genung’s Department Store on 7 Main Street in Getty Square where it remained for over 20 years. The Yonkers Public Library was soon forced to find a new home. As of September 2002, the Yonkers Public Library has called 1 Larkin Center its main home. With four spacious floors it shares its facilities with the headquarters of the Yonkers Board of Education.
