Car Rental New York City and Yankee Stadium

Yankee Stadium – Home of the New York Yankees

Since 1923, the New York Yankees have made their home in one of the most iconic sporting venues ever built: Yankee Stadium in the borough of the Bronx in New York City, easily accessible to Brooklyn car rentals customers.

Christened with a third inning homer during the first game played there, by arguably the greatest player of all time, Babe Ruth, Yankee Stadium has seen over two dozen World Championships won by the home team, earning the title “House of Champions”. The first team to fall to the Yankees in their new home were the Boston Red Sox, the team that sold New York their new star attraction.

Yankee Stadium is also known as the “House that Babe Built”, seeing completion three years after Babe Ruth first donned the famed pin stripes. Construction took an impossibly short 284 working days.

Ruth’s popularity help the Yankees out draw the rightful inhabitants of the Polo Grounds, the ballpark that the New York Giants rented to the Yankees for their home games. The landlord-tenant relationship was rocky and being the second most popular ball team in the park prompted the Giants to ask the Yankees to relocate. Those hoping to take their Brooklyn car rentals to see the old Polo Grounds are now greeted by four apartment buildings and the asphalt playground named Willie Mays Field.

Yankee owners Colonels Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston decided to build more than just an ample replacement for their ball club. Yankee Stadium featured seating for more than 70,000 fans and originally was designed with triple decks all around which were to include a roof overhead. Take your Brooklyn car rentals down to the stadium to see the somewhat scaled down end product. Triple decks still line most of the stadium, stretching into shallow left and right field.

Changes Over the Years

Over the years Yankee Stadium received notable upgrades. In 1928 and 1937, the upper level grandstands were extended. Night ballgames became possible in 1946 with the addition of lights. 1967 saw the seats painted blue over the original green and the exterior brown covered in white paint.

Brooklyn car rentals customers who visit the stadium now will see the result of a complete two-year rebuild finished in 1976. Very little of the original structure remained – the playing field was even lowered to help the engineers provide better sight lines for the fans. The Yankees quickly made the new stadium feel like the old one, winning three straight American League Pennants and the World Series title in 1977 and 1978. Even completely rebuilt, the House of Champions lives up to its billing.

Monument Park

Taking advantage of Brooklyn car rentals, Yankee fans can get to the game early and spend some time exploring this historic building. During the week, the gates open 90 minutes before game time and on the weekends you can get in two hours prior to the opening pitch.

Located behind the left field fence is Monument Park. Here the Yankees pay tribute to their greatest stars over the years. Of course Babe Ruth has his number 3 retired and a plaque to celebrate his many achievements as a Yankee. Other greats with plaques commemorating their years as Yankees include Lou Gehrig, Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, tenacious manager Billy Martin, Jackie Robinson and a host of others.

A walking area and gardens surround many of the monuments erected to the most notable managers and players of the illustrious history of the New York Yankees. Many of these monuments were erected and displayed in the original Yankees Stadium.

You don’t even need tickets to the Yankees game to visit the stadium and Monument Park. Guided tour are offered and the park is open every game day from the times the gates open until 45 minutes prior to the opening pitch.

Whether you are going to see the Yankees in action, or just to take in one of the true historic sporting stadiums in the country, Brooklyn car rentals are an excellent way to get you and your friends and family to the ballpark.
