New York Rental Car and Weeksville Historic Hunterfly Road Houses

Not to a baseball game or to visit the Statue of Liberty and not even to check out a Broadway show. Well, you can do all of those, but first check out the Weeksville Historic Hunterfly Road Houses. Weeksville used to be a community located in Brooklyn back in the 19th century. James Weeks bought the land in 1838 from a man named Henry C. Thomson. Today, Weeksville is home to a free African American community but the houses from way back when are still intact and are located on what was once Hunterfly Road. There is an amazing history to this area and it is a great place to visit if you are with your family or even if you are traveling alone on your New York car rental trip.
A restoration process
The Road Houses date from 1840-1883 and have been constructed into museums under the direction of the Weeksville Heritage Center. They have all been restored so that they look as close to the old homes as possible. The area underwent a $3.5 restoration and the four main houses were eventually opened up to the public. These houses were available for public observation in 2005 and it’s the first time they were opened up since they were found back in 1968. Come and check out these road houses and discover a proud African American heritage and an architectural style that will have you inspired. The houses were presented with an Excellence in Historic Preservation Award because of the great restoration they achieved. The Historic Hunterfly Road Houses are a must-see on your New York car rental trip because of the architecture, the educational experience and the overall atmosphere of the community.
A completely different lifestyle
The first of the Road Houses was built in the 1840s at 1702-04 Bergen Street. It is a wooden framed house that fits up to two families but is only one story. There is a brick chimney that the families had to share but there have also been extensions put on the house in recent years. At 1698 Bergen Street, you will find a two-story house that was built in 1850. This house was used as a two family house and also as a single family residence. Like the previous dwelling, this one was also expanded. At 1700 Bergen Street there is a home that was built in 1883. This one has a hall-parlor form to it and is the only house of the four to have a definite date that supports its creation. Built in 1865 at 1706-08 Bergen Street, this contemporary place was one and a half stories for two families. It was destroyed due to a fire but soon restored to look like it did in the 1800s. If you wish to go on a tour of these incredible houses, it will cost you $4. Tours run Tues-Fri at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and Saturdays from 11am-3pm.
