Following the Wave: A Brief History

Wave Hill boasts an intricate history involving a number of important American families. Built as a country home in 1843 by distinguished jurist William Lewis Morris, the estate quickly attracted the attention of publishing scion William Henry Appleton. Appleton was always fond of visitors and it wasn't uncommon to see natural scientists like Charles Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley regularly roaming the property. Theodore Roosevelt's family would later rent Wave Hill during the summers of 1870 and '71, increasing Teddy's growing passion for the outdoors. But the most famous resident to every call Wave Hill home was Mr. Mark Twain, who leased the estate between 1901 and 1903. George W. Perkins, a partner at J.P Morgan, would later purchase Wave Hill House in 1903. Perkins enhanced much of the grounds around the manor, adding to the gardens and greenhouses original instituted by Appleton. Perkins also added a swimming pool, terraces and what is now referred to as the Ecology Building. Other famous residents at Wave Hill have included eminent zoologist Bashford Dean, conductor Arturo Toscanini and a number of chief members from the British Delegation of the United Nations. Wave Hill was eventually deeded to the City of New York in 1960.
