Today, being Mayor of New York City comes with many perks including big houses, power, and prestige. Over the last few centuries, many legendary American's have held the post of Mayor of New York City, and one, Isaac Varian, the 63rd Mayor of NYC, lived in Valentine-Varian House. After the Revolutionary War, Isaac's father, also named Isaac, bought the Valentine-Varian House and the 260 attached acres from the Valentine family. The home then stayed in the Varian family, hence the name, from 1792 until 1905 when the building was sold at auction to William F. Beller. All of this history, and facts and exhibits about the surrounding area are on display in the current museum, which came into being after the Beller family donated the home to the Bronx Historical Society in 1965.
