Brooklyn Heights history
Brooklyn Heights occupies a bluff that rise sharply from the river and recedes on the landward side. Before the Dutch occupied Long Island, the area was called Ihpetonga, or the "high sandy bank" by the natives of the area. This area was fortified before the American Revolution and the Battle of Long Island. After British troops landed in the area, Washington withdrew and the area was a British stronghold. The Town of Brooklyn was the city's first commuter town in the early 19th century when the ferry service connected with Manhattan. Today, the area is still right across the river from Manhattan and remains an important connection to the city. The area was once (or still) home to many famous residents, including Truman Capote, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Giamatti, Arthur Miller, Mary Tyler Moore, and Walt Whitman. This was also the fictional home of the Huxtable family on the Cosby Show.
