A community event
Organized by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Transportation Alternatives & Montefiore Medical Center in Association with Bronx Lebanon Hospital & St Barnabas Hospital, Tour de Bronx is New York State's largest free cycling event. With over 6, 000 cyclists hitting the road on a course that covers 65 miles, Tour De Bronx is the largest free cycling event in New York State. There's no more diverse event in The Bronx. Men and women, children and older adults from every one of the borough's 61 neighbourhoods and from every demographic group take part in the "big Bronx ride" Produced by the Bronx Tourism Council in partnership with the city's bicycling and pedestrian advocacy group, Transportation Alternatives, Tour De Bronx promotes bicycling and pedestrian environmentally friendly way to get around. Each year, the ride features great neighbourhoods, waterfronts, historic districts and even a portion of the Sheridan Expressway, closed especially to welcome riders. The ride ends with a music festival at the New York Botanical Garden. Tour De Bronx riders don't pay a fee—thanks to generous sponsors!
Transportation Alternatives
The Bronx Committee is one of Transportation Alternative's most successful volunteer campaigns. Founded in 1994, the Bronx Committee was involved in developing the Bronx Greenway Plan and organizing the first Safe Routes to School program in North America. Today, the Bronx Committee continues its outreach. The Bronx Committee is a part of a coalition of Bronx-based advocacy organizations on Car-Free Crotona Saturdays, and partner with the Bronx Borough President's office on the Tour de Bronx, now in its 15th year. The Bronx Committee also joins Transportation Alternative for the Bronx leg of the NYC Century Bike Tour, which brings thousands of riders through Van Cortlandt Park.
Choosing your route
For a light ride the 25 mile ride is a leisurely route that's great for every age and skill level. Enjoy Bronx Greenway bike paths, parklands, shoreline and more. Ride marshals and NYPD escorts accompany riders. It's a one-of-a-kind experience and a great way to see the Bronx. For those looking for something a little more challenging the 40 mile ride is the way to go. The pace is significantly faster on this ride which covers a greater distance in the same amount of time. This ride ventures further to visit places like City Island and SUNY Maritime College. It is recommended for experienced cyclists who are comfortable riding in traffic. Whichever you choose you are bound to have a great time with your Bronx car hire.
Bike the Bronx
Can't make it out in October with your Bronx car hire? No problem! Members of Transportation Alternative's Bronx Committee have decided to sponsor a monthly ride called "Bike the Bronx" to promote biking in the Bronx borough. Bronxites, as well as visitors can take part in this ride that is held on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The committee will change the route every month so you will want to check their website to see the latest before you head out with your Bronx car hire.
