St. George Ferry Terminal and Staten Island Car Hire

Enjoy a ride on the Staten Island Ferry with your Staten Island Car Hire. It is not just a mode of transportation to go from one place to another but offers a great view of some iconic American symbols including a majestic sight of The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The sight of the receding skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan offers a peaceful calm away from the crowds, at least for a little while.

About the Ferry

Since 1905, the Staten Island Ferry has been a municipal service owned and operated by NYC DOT, carrying over 20 million passengers per year. The ferry travels a total of 5.2 miles between St. George Terminal in Staten Island and the Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan. During the weekday five boats make about 110 daily trips carrying a total of 65, 000 passengers. During the weekend, three boats make a total of 64 trips daily. Between trips, the boats are fuelled and maintenance work is performed before they go out again. The fleet consists of nine vessels. The 3 newest vessels included the The Guy V. Molinari, the Senator John J. Marchi, and the Spirit of America and were all built by the Manitowoc Marine Group and designed by George G. Sharpe Inc. Marine System, Analysis, & Design.

A facelift for St. George

When you visit the St. George Ferry Terminal with your Staten Island Car Hire you will notice the terminals “greener” upgrades including the Photovoltaic louver system which saves 25% of the energy required to operate the facility. Another green feature is the 18, 000 square foot living roof visible from the public viewing area of local flora and vegetation. Run-off will be used to irrigate the soil of the roof-top garden instead of using a storm water drainage system.

Under the sea

On Tuesday, February 19, 2008, two 8 foot tall, 1, 6000- gallon fish tanks were unveiled by Borough President James P. Molinaro, Councilman Michael McMahon, Mayor Bloomberg, and Staten Island Ferry Chief Operating Officer James DeSimone to the young ferry riders and local school children that were gathered. The $750, 000 from capital funding was used to purchase the tank. The 200 tropical fish will be maintained by the Staten Island Zoo. The salt water aquariums are a definite must see when you travel with your Staten Island Car Hire.

Before you go with your Staten Island Car Hire…

There is no fee for passengers to ride the Staten Island Ferry. The fare was eliminated in 1997 and used to cost 50 cents for a round trip between St. George, Staten Island and the Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan.
