Formerly Known as Flushing Meadow Park

On April 17, 1964, Shea Stadium opened its doors to the public. It was originally called Flushing Meadows Park because of where it was located, but it was later renamed. William A. Shea was a well-known lawyer and after the removal of the Dodgers and Giants, he headed a campaign to bring baseball back to New York. This $25.5 million stadium was the first to be designed to host baseball and football games. This stadium has attracted more that 73 million fans and is conveniently located in the center of New York City. Bill Shea baptized the stadium on opening day with two symbolic bottles of water. One bottle was from the Harlem River where the Mets and the Giants played in the 1962 and 1963 seasons. The other bottle of water was from the Gowanus Canal near the Brooklyn Dodgers' home field.
