Car Rentals NYC and Shea Stadium
Imagine that it is game 7 of the World Series and the New York Mets are playing the Atlanta Braves at the famous Shea Stadium. The series is tied 3-3 and the winner of this game will take it all. It is the bottom of the 9th inning and the Mets are up for their last hits. The Mets are down by 1 run and there is a man on base with 2 outs. It is all up to the batter. Will he be a hero, or will the Mets lose the World Series after coming so far? The pitch is thrown; the batter swings and connects with the ball. It goes out of the park, a home run! The Mets win the World Series by a single run. Shea Stadium is the only place where all of this excitement can happen, New York City car rental customers. The determination, the anticipation and the nail-biting games take place right inside the doors of the stadium. Feel free to bring your camera and capture the moments that will last a lifetime. A baseball game at Shea Stadium is a great way to spend an afternoon with the family and to witness moments that may go down in history. Come check out the stadium and enjoy a game on your upcoming NYC car rental trip.
Formerly Known as Flushing Meadow Park
On April 17, 1964, Shea Stadium opened its doors to the public. It was originally called Flushing Meadows Park because of where it was located, but it was later renamed. William A. Shea was a well-known lawyer and after the removal of the Dodgers and Giants, he headed a campaign to bring baseball back to New York. This $25.5 million stadium was the first to be designed to host baseball and football games. This stadium has attracted more that 73 million fans and is conveniently located in the center of New York City. Bill Shea baptized the stadium on opening day with two symbolic bottles of water. One bottle was from the Harlem River where the Mets and the Giants played in the 1962 and 1963 seasons. The other bottle of water was from the Gowanus Canal near the Brooklyn Dodgers' home field. NYC car rental customers might be interested to know that the Mets lost their first game in the stadium to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.
You might see Elton John
There have been many events that have taken place in this stadium since it first opened. College and pro football, soccer, religious conventions and cultural events have all been introduced in Shea. Pope John Paul II and the Ice Capades have also been here. In 1965, the Beatles played in the stadium in front of 60,000 fans. Other musicians who have played here have been The Rolling Stones, Elton John, The Who and Janis Joplin (among others). The rivals of the Mets, the New York Yankees, have played in this stadium and it has also served as a relief center for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Come discover the history behind the stadium on your next NYC car rental vacation.
Tickets for the games at Shea range in price from $5 to $75 dollars depending on where you want to sit. You can also get a variety of Mets merchandise, including apparel and tickets to home games at the Clubhouse Shops. There are 3 shops: one at Roosevelt Field Mall, one at 11 West 42nd Street and the other at the Manhattan Mall. Check out the shops on your NYC car rental trip and get souvenirs to take with you anywhere. If you are planning on driving, it cost $13 for the day for cars to park in the parking lot. Visit Shea Stadium for an afternoon of fun and enjoyment. You never know when a game may go down in the history books.
