Built in 1868, the Poppenhusen Institute came about because of a donation made by Conrad Poppenhusen. The goal of the building was to allow all people of every race, religion and creed to be able to have their chance of a lifetime. The aim was to give them the opportunity to progress their lives by giving them something purposeful to do in their spare time and to prepare them for the jobs they always fantasized about. It has housed the Justice of the Peace, German Singing Societies, and the Sheriff’s Office. It has also been the building of the College Point Savings Bank and a court room. The Poppenhusen Institute was such a gorgeous looking building that it was named a New York Landmark in 1970. It was also put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 because of its impressive history and all that it has accomplished. Many adult education programs have also been held in this building and many members of these programs have gone on to do great things, like owning their own businesses. The building was threatened in 1980 when it was said that it would be put up for sale or demolished. But, fortunately, a community group stepped up and was able to save the building. Today, there are a variety of programs that are held in the Poppenhusen Institute that aim to better society. The institute acts as a cultural community center and offers programs like acting for youth, piano lessons, slide and oral presentations and historic exhibits. There is also a local theatre company, karate for people of all ages, country line dancing and concerts. The Poppenhusen Institute is open all year on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9am-8pm, Wednesdays from 9am-5pm and Fridays from noon-7pm. The building is closed on Thursdays and it is only open for special events on the weekends.
