History of the park

If it is history that you are into, go to Owl Head Park in your All Car Brooklyn car rental and familiarize yourself with this historic green space. This is the place where Canarsie Indians, members of the Mohegan Nation, fished and lived. The first settlers from Europe were the Dutch who named the area Yellow Hook. Among these farmers was a freed slave; Swaen Janse who purchased land, which is now a part of Owls Head Park. In 1853, citizens concerned that the name ellow Hook?would remind people of the yellow fever epidemic, renamed this neighborhood Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Owl Head Park is located on a terminal moraine (where a 10,000 year old

Wisconsin glacier deposited boulders, rocks, soil and debris) extending from New Jersey to the end of Long Island.

A Brooklyn native, Henry C. Murphy (1810-1882) built his estate along the glacial ridge. He eventually became the Mayor of Brooklyn, a U.S. Representative, the U.S. Minister to The Hague, and New York State Senator. During his run as a Senator Henry drafted the bill which authorized the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. He founded The Brooklyn Eagle and was one of its main editors. Senator Street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn was named in his honor.

A wealthy manufacturer, Eliphalet W. Bliss (1836-1903) purchased Murphy estate in 1866. He went on to make his fortune by introducing mass production to the pressed metal industry. Bliss built a horse stable and observatory tower on the estates property. In his will he offered the land to New York City with the condition that it be used for parkland. The land was designated a park in 1928.

So, why not pick up your family and have a picnic during the summer at Owls Head Park? You could even enjoy a summer concert or a nature walk. Or you can pack your sled in your rental and head down to the park for an afternoon of wintery fun. Borough President Golden and Council Member Sal Albanese funded a restoration of the park in 1994, which provided a new playground, landscaping, and new paved paths. This park was once the preserve of wealthy families. Now it is available for all Brooklyn car rental visitors to enjoy.
