New York Yacht Club

The New York Yacht Club is a private yacht club based in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. The club was founded in 1844 and has over 3000 members. Membership is by invitation only. Club history

When you are here with your 15 passenger rental van, you may learn that the New York Yacht Club was founded on July 30, 1844 by nine men. In 1845, the club's burgee was designed. The waters off Newport were a key sailing area for the New York Yacht Club since its inception. During the first decades of the New York Yacht Club, the objective for most of the members was to race for prize money. In 1851, a syndicate of the New York Yacht Club built and raced America to win the "One Hundred Sovereign Cup" a the annual regatta of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Club and serves as an international challenge for those in the sport.

Clubhouses

The first clubhouse was established in 1845 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The club soon outgrew this location and moved to Staten Island, Glen Cove, New York, and Mystic, Connecticut before it settled in Newport on the grounds of Harbour Court. The primary clubhouse is a six-story Beaux-Arts landmark at 37 West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan. It opened in 1901 and is a National Historic Landmark. You can't see the inside, but you will be able to marvel at the fa鏰de. There is also a clubhouse on the water in Newport that opened in 1988.

Newport

When you are here with your 15 passenger rental van, you may have a chance to get to Newport. This is a city on Aquidneck Island, about 30 miles south of Providence. This area is known as a New England summer resort and famous for the mansions along the shore. The city has one of the highest number of surviving colonial buildings in any city in the United States. The mansions of the Gilded Age are popular in the area. Some of the wealthiest families in the United States, including the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Wideners made their summer homes here.
