Learn about the dream

In 1831, a group of prominent New Yorkers (merchants, bankers, and traders) established NYU. They believed that the city needed a university for young men to be admitted on the basis of merit, not birthright or social class. It was created as a non-denominational school, unlike most other schools at the time. In 1832, NYU held its first class in rents rooms out of Clinton Hall. In 1835, the School of Law was established. When you visit with your NYC car rental, you can visit the Washington Square campus, which has been part of the university since its founding. There was also the University Heights Campus in the Bronx. This was purchased because of overcrowding in 1894. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a financial crisis in New York that affected the university as well. They were forced to sell the University Heights campus to the City University of New York in 1973.
