The New York Mets was first conceived in 1959 by New York attorney William Shea. It was in March 6, 1961 in which the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc. formally received a certificate of membership from Warren Giles, National League President. The team nickname, the "Mets" was announced two days later. The first official game was played on April 11, 1962 against the Cardinals in St. Louis with an 11-4 loss for the Mets. Their first home game was on April 13, 1962 with a 4-3 Pirate win at the Polo Grounds. In April 23, 1962, the Mets celebrated their first victory, 9-1, in Pittsburgh. Since then the Mets have gone through several exciting seasons with several highlights which include:

  • October 6, 1969 - During the Mets first National League Championship, they defeated the Braves at Shea 7-4.
  • October 12, 1969 - It was the day that the Mets won their first World Series game, a 2-1 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore.
  • October 5, 1986 - One of the greatest games in postseason history, the Mets won against the Houston Astros 7-6 in 16 innings during their third National League Championship in 1986.
  • October 27, 1986 - The Mets beat the Boston Red Sox 8-5 in Game Seven of the World Series and become the World Champions once again.
  • September 22, 1988 - The Mets win the National League East with a 3-1 victory over the Phillies at Shea.
  • October 8, 2000 - One of the greatest game ever pitched by the Mets, Bobby J. Jones threw a complete-game, 4-0 one-hitter to advance to the NLCS.
  • September 21, 2001 - The Mets host the first professional sporting event in New York City since the tragic terrorist attack on September 11th.
  • June 15, 2003 - 20 years and 4 days was what it took for Jose Reyes to be the youngest player in history of the league to hit a grand slam since Tony Conigliaro in 1964

New York City Car Rental and the Mets Logo

It was on November 16, 1961 when the circular Mets logo was unveiled by sports cartoonist Ray Gatto. Since then, throughout the history of the team, the insignia has had little if any change. The Mets logo actually has quite a lot of meaning. The shape of the logo with the orange stitching represents a baseball, with the bridge symbolizing the Mets bringing back the National League to New York. The colors blue and orange (Dodger blue and Giant orange to be precise) are the official colors of New York State. The skyline in the background, from left to right:

  • A church spire, representing Brooklyn
  • Williamsburg Savings Bank, the tallest building in Brooklyn
  • The Woolworth Building
  • The Empire State Building
  • The logo ends with the United Nations building to the far right.
