The New Jersey City University doors were first officially opened in 1929 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City, the school was eventually renamed to the New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City in 1935 and the Jersey City State College in 1958. In 1968 it became a liberal arts college. Finally in 1998, the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education approved the institutions request for a change of status and the institution was one again renamed to the present name, the New Jersey City University.
