Selecting a home for the National Lighthouse Museum

In 1997, lighthouse organizations across the country banded together in order to fund and create a National Museum in celebration of this important maritime tool. The museum was intended to tell the story of America’s lighthouse heritage, beginning with primitive fire beacons and continuing through to modern day technologies like GPS. But where does one put such an important maritime icon? The United States boasts hundreds of important ports, marinas and docks, so how do you pick just one? Dozens of cities bid for the honour, but one stood out as an obvious favourite. St. George, Staten Island was once home to the USLHS/US Coast Guard “super depot” and was a major center for lighthouse supply, maintenance and experimentation for nearly 150 years. What better place to pay homage to the great lighthouses of our nation?
