History of Nathan's Famous

Nathan Handwerker arrived in America at the age of 20 and began working in various restaurants as a dishwasher and later worked the counter. He started working at Feltman's, who happens to be the man who created the hot dog in 1874, and the rest as they say is history. Within a year of working at Feltman's, Nathan had saved up enough money to invest into the rental of a building at the corners of Stillwell and Surf Avenues.

With signs that were far from subtle, he sold his hot dogs for five cents a-piece and used a twelve-foot grill and added a touch of garlic to his sausages. But many of the people walking by were weary of anyplace that would sell its food at half the price of Feltman's, and kept on walking. In the 1920's, the Stillwell Avenue subway station opened directly across from Nathan's which proved to be a prime location for selling food that was considered “eat on the go”. After the second World War, Feltman's closed down as did many other eat-in restaurants, but Nathan's new fast food concept had skyrocketed and Nathan's celebrated selling its one millionth hot dog in 1955.

Hot Dog Eating Contest

For an experience you need to see to believe, visit Nathan's Famous in Brooklyn car rentals on the fourth of July, Independence Day, when it holds its annual hot dog eating contest at this original site in Coney Island. There are approximately 20 contestants from all over the world in this contest. The contestants stand on a raised platform behind a 30 foot long table with hot dogs and drinks presented in front of them. Most choose to drink water, but other drinks have been used in the past. Condiments are usually not used but are permitted. Once the hot dogs have been cooled off the grill, they are placed in front of the contestants and whoever can eat and keep down the most hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes is declared the winner. Partially eaten hot dogs count and any hot dog that is still in the mouth at the end of the 12 minutes counts only if it is swallowed.

The winner of the contest receives a trophy, the coveted international mustard-yellow belt and a year's supply of Nathan's Famous hot dogs. Although there is no cash award, sponsors have been known to donate prizes such as trips.
