Julliard was founded in 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art on the premise that the United States did not have a premier music school and too many students were going to Europe for this type of education. In 1910, it occupied the building that is currently the home of the Manhattan School of Music. The name changed in 1920, when Augustus Julliard bequeathed a substantial amount of money to the school for the advancement of music in the United States. The Julliard Graduate School merged with the Institute of Musical Arts in 1926 and was officially combined in 1937.
