In 1972, it was renamed for Marcus Garvey as a political move for then-mayor. One thing to check out while you are here is the Watchtower, which is the apartment building on 124th Street facing the park. This was a fire watchtower that was built in 1855-57 of cast iron. This structure allowed people use to the natural elevation of the park and the extra height for look out for fires in the city. There were eleven of these built in the city, but this is the only one that survives.

The park is now named for Marcus Garvey, who was an advocate for economic independence within the black community in the early 20th century. He was also a proponent of black nationalism. Born in Jamaica, he later immigrated to Harlem and established the Universal Negro Improvement Association. Garvey wanted to ultimately establish an independent nation for black Americans in West Africa and established businesses to do so. In 1923 he was convicted of mail fraud and was eventually deported to Jamaica.

When you are in the park, you will fin there is a recreation center and an amphitheater. Both of these facilities can be found on the west side of the park at 122nd Street. There is also a swimming pool on the north side of the park, as well as two playgrounds for kids. The British used the area for fortifications during the Revolutionary War because of its location near the Harlem River.
