Loews Jersey Theater

A “lavish temple”

When Loew’s Jersey opened in September 1929 with a stop on the subway line that ran between New York and Newark. It was built for $2 million and was one of the biggest theaters of the time. When the theater first opened, it drew many stars of the 1930s for performances and movies. But after World War II, the theater industry changed. Plain theaters were being built along the highways to the suburbs, where people were moving and lavish theaters were no longer the place to go. By the 1970s though, things were not going well. There was a battle to save the theater, which took six years. Loews reopened as a not-for-profit arts center to showcase music, plays, and movies.
