The Three Tubes of the Lincoln Tunnel

Plans for a tunnel which would connect Weehawken, New Jersey with midtown Manhattan were announced early in 1930, around the same time that the Port Authority acquired jurisdiction on the Holland Tunnel. Originally designed as a twin-tube tunnel, the “Midtown Hudson Tunnel” was overseen by the Port Authority’s chief engineer Othmar Ammann, while legendary tunnel mogul Ole Singstad worked as a consultant. In the end only one tube was constructed between 1934 and 1937, creating a small but functional two lane tunnel costing approximately $75 million. It wasn’t long before traffic began to clog this tiny pathway, prompting the creation of a second tube north of the original tunnel. Traffic rates continued to climb during the post war era, prompting consideration for a separate twin tunnel system location. Areas in consideration included a connection between 14th Street in Manhattan and Hoboken, New Jersey, yet none were deemed acceptable. In the end, the Port Authority decided to add an additional tube to the Lincoln Tunnel, creating the first triple-tube vehicular tunnel in the world. Completed in 1957 the third arm of the Lincoln Tunnel included a peripheral parking area and numerous new approach roads at both the Manhattan and Weehawken entrance.
