Jersey City Museum

The Jersey City Museum is located in the Van Vorst Park section of downtown Jersey City with your New York car rental. They also reflect the cultural diversity of New Jersey and focus on contemporary art. It dates back to 1901 when the museum was located in the Jersey City Public Library.

About the museum

The mission of the Jersey City Museum is to “present, collect, and interpret American visual art and material culture” and to serve as the center of cultural life for the people of Jersey City and Hudson County. The museum was founded in 1901 as a museum of art, science, industry, and history to educate the public. The Jersey City Museum was an important cultural center in the first half of the 20th century, particularly for the immigrant families that moved to the area. In the 1950s, it suffered with the economic downturn, but was revived in the 1970s with a community effort to revive the museum.

The permanent collection

When you visit with your New York car rental, the gallery is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students with ID. The museum is free for kids under 12. Admission is free on Target Free Saturdays, every Saturday during gallery hours. It is located at 350 Montgomery Street at the corner of Monmouth Street in Jersey City. There is parking available for your New York car rental on Mercer Street, behind the museum.

Explore the area

When you visit with your New York car rental, you will find yourself in the Van Vorst Park neighborhood, part of historic downtown Jersey City. The area has a number of nineteenth century rowhouses and brownstones. One place to check out is the Dr. William Barrow Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This home was constructed by Cornelius Van Vorst, mayor of Jersey City from 1860-1862 and a prominent family in the area. It is currently used as a community center and theater company.

Wall Street West

Another interesting place to visit in the area with your New York car rental is Exchange Place, sometimes referred to as “Wall Street West”. It is a major transportation hub for the downtown Jersey City area and the major business district. The Goldman Sachs Tower is the tallest building in the state.
