Jackson Heights Queens

Jackson Heights is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens that you can visit when you are here with your Queens car rental.

Where you will find the neighborhood

When you visit with your Queens rental car, you will find that Jackson Heights is bordered by Astoria Boulevard to the north, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to the west, Roosevelt Avenue to the south, and Junction Boulevard to the east. This is where the IRT Flushing Line meets the IND Queens Boulevard Line. There are many ways to get here without having to drive.

Area history

When you are here with your car rental Queens, you may learn that much of the neighborhood is part of the National Register Historic District and a New York State Historic Register District. There are a large number of garden apartment buildings and many groupings of private homes. The community was initially planned as a neighborhood for middle and upper-middle income workers from Manhattan to raise their families. It is believed this was the first garden city community to be built in the United States as part of the garden city movement at the end of the 19th century. This was an approach to urban planning that was intended to be planned, self-contained communities surrounded by greenbelts. The area has a number of private parks for the residents that are hidden from the street. The gardens are only open to residents and their guests.

What you can do here

When you are here with your rental car Queens, you will find a number of retailers in the area. The main shopping area in the neighborhood is located on 37th Avenue from 72nd Street to Junction Boulevard. There is also more retail on 82nd, 73rd, and 74th Streets between 37th and Roosevelt Avenues. The stores on and near 74th Street tend to cater to the large South Asian population in the neighborhood, so you can find sari and jewellery stores here as well as restaurants. During the summer, there is a Greenmarket every Sunday morning at Travers Park and there are several family-oriented concerts in the spring and summer here.

How to get here

You can get here with your Queens rental car, or you can take the subway to get here (the V, R, G, E, F, and 7 lines stop here). The E and F lines are express trains to midtown Manhattan, but the 7 line is a more leisurely way to get here. Getting here with your car rental Queens may not be the best way to get here. The streets tend to be crowded, but if you do drive, try the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and Northern Boulevard. It is best to avoid Roosevelt Avenue.

Where to eat

When you are here with your rental car Queens, you can try the Jackson Diner, which is a New York institution. It was once the neighborhood greasy spoon, but today is a little more upscale. They serve food from the northern region of India, such as curries and tandooris, that are light, yet filling. Shaheen's is another landmark where you can get Pakistani sweets.

When you are here with your Queens car rental, you will find that Jackson Heights has great architecture, food, shopping, and more while you are here. This community has unique architecture that you can rarely find in other areas of the city with the private gardens (though you will not be able to see them unless you know someone that lives here). If you like South Asian food, such as Indian cuisine, you will also find there are some great places to eat here.
