Hudson River Museum and Yonkers Rental Cars

Visit the largest museum in Westchester County on your next adventure with your Yonkers rental cars. Founded in 1919 at City Hall, it eventually became the Hudson River Museum in 1948. The Hudson River Museum has an extensive collection ranging from a wide variety of exhibits in different subjects including art, history, science and heritage of the region. In fact, the diversity of the museum was cited by the New York State Council of the Arts in 1972 as one of the most unusual cultural facilities. The Hudson River Museum strives to maintain this diversity to this very day.

Early beginnings

In 1919, the Yonkers Museum, also known as the Yonkers Museum of Science and the Arts, as It was known as back then, housed an impressive collection of mineral specimens. The museum’s name was only changed to Hudson River Museum in 1994, during its 75th anniversary celebration. Also a part of the Hudson River Museum is the Glenview Mansion which was built in 1877 and is a National Register site. The Glenview Mansion was once the home of John Bond Trevor, and from 1929, the home of the museum. Six period rooms with traditional furniture and décor represent the Glenview Mansion.

Reaching for the stars

The Hudson River Museum is the home of the only public planetarium in Westchester County. Initially installed in 1969 to help celebrate the beginning of the Space Age and to expand the museum. The installation of the planetarium and laser shows is created for increasing the museum’s attendance for 30% in the early 1990’s.

Troubling times

During the late 1980s, like many other museums during that time, the Hudson River Museum was facing cut backs in funding, and uncertain future, and high staff turnover. This instability forced the Hudson River Museum to cut back a lot of its hours of operation, and programs, although the plans for the planetarium expansion were still being made. In the 1990s under new leadership and a number of grants and awards, and funds from the Westchester County allowed for the Hudson River Museum to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Museum attendance also doubled from 55, 000 to 100, 000 between 1990 and 1994. However, the late 1990s also eventually saw a downturn in funding and the museum again was faced with significant cutbacks. As a way to increased funds, the Hudson River Museum began to host private functions and tours.
