It’s all in the name

The land that was owned by Colonel John Stevens was named “Hoboken”. When you visit with your New York Car Rental, you will find a large part of this land is where the city still sits. The name is believed to be derived from the Lenape or Delaware Indians who referred to the area as the “land of the tobacco pipe”. This was likely reference to the tobacco pipes that were carved from the soapstone collected in the area.
