Park history

Over the last two centuries, this park has been occupied by some of the most prominent families on Staten Island, including the Vanderbilts, Flaggs, Conners, Ebbets, and Tonkings. In the 1930s, the Boy Scouts Council owned the land and used it to host thousands of campers every year. In 1951, the Boy Scouts sold the land to the Girl Scouts Council of Greater New York, and they helped to keep the area free of urban development. The park was officially dedicated in 1965, and there was additional land added in 1988.

High Rock Park has five ponds and wetlands, including Walker Pond and Loosestrife, which you can visit with your Staten Island car rental. There are six walking trails where you can see red maples, Highbush berries, and skunk cabbage. Animals such as wood ducks, great blue herons, and muskrats make their homes here with a number of birds, frogs, and turtles. The park has grown over the years to become one of the largest natural areas in the five boroughs.
