The gallery started in 1928 and rose quickly in the 1930s to prominence. They were the first museum in the west to exhibit the famous Russian Imperial Easter Eggs by Karl Faberge. After establishing itself as a master of Russian art, they wanted to build on their reputation and displayed the collections of William Randolph Hearst and J.P. Morgan. By the 1960s, the gallery shifted their focus to works of art from the 19th and 20th century from American and European Masters.
