Staten Island Car Rentals and The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is located in the heart of Rosebank with your Staten Island car rental. Antonia Meucci was a pioneer inventor and Giuseppe Garibaldi was a legendary hero. The museum is located in a country residence that was built in 1840 in the Gothic-revival style. In 1850, Meucci and his wife began renting it. That same year, Garibaldi also arrived in New York and Meucci offered for him to stay at his house. They lived and worked together until 1854 when Garibaldi returned to Italy to lead them to unity.

From a humble beginning

When Garibaldi died in 1884, a committee was formed to commemorate his time in America. A plaque was place on the door of the house. When Meucci died, the house was turned over to the Italian community to be preserved as a memorial. In 1907, the house was moved to its present location, where a pantheon was erected over it. In 1919, the house was turned over to The Order Sons of Italy in America. It has restored and maintained the house since then. Artifacts have been collected from around the world and have been displayed to the public since 1956.

Learn a little more about these two men

Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian military and political figure. In his twenties, he joined the Italian patriot revolutionaries and had to flee the country after a failed insurrection. He went to Uruguay to help lead them in the Uruguayan Civil War. Garibaldi has been dubbed the "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his service in South America and Europe and is an Italian national hero. Garibaldi helped to contribute to the unification of Italy.
Antonio Meucci was an Italian inventor who developed a form of voice communication autocrats in 1857. Many credit him to inventing the telephone, and was recognized by the House of Representatives in 2002 as such. They determined that "if Meucci had been able to pay the $10 fee to maintain the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell".
