Fresh Meadow Country Club

Fresh Meadow Country Club is a great golf course to visit when you are here with your Queens rental car. It is a club that has been the result of two great country clubs that first opened in the 1920s and have merged into one. The course was designed by Harry Colt. Club history

Fresh Meadow Country Club got its start late in the summer of 1921 when representatives of the Golf Course Construction Company approached the Unity Club, a social organization serving the Brooklyn area. They proposed to build an 18-hole golf course in the area. The club was developed as a first class club with a course that would test the leading players of the sport. The course opened on September 8, 1923. Nine days later, the clubhouse burned to the ground. In the 1930s, the course came to prominence when Gene Sarazen won the 1932 US Open here. With the suburbs starting to encroach on the course, the owners sold the property in Flushing and bought a club in Lakeville. Lakeville had been a recreation center since the 1800s. It opened as a golf and country club in 1925 and has hosted people like Irving Berlin and Oscar Hammerstein.

Several tees are elevated well above the fairway and almost every hole has bunkering. The 12th hole is one of Long Island's best par fours. The hole doglegs to the left and climbs sharply to an elevated green with a pair of bunkers to the right. This is a confusing hole for golfers to judge the distance to the pin.
