Hourly Car Rentals New York and Fresh Kills Park

Plans are underway to create a new park in the city of New York. While this is interesting news, it might not grab you as an exciting city development. Or does it? When complete, this park would span 2,200 acres - nearly three times the space of Central Park. It would combine recreation with art, ecological restoration and public education. Oh, and did we mention it would be built on a landfill? Known as the Fresh Kills Park Project, this new green space, once completed, will be the most ambitious public works program in the world. With ambitions like this, it's no wonder the Fresh Kills Park Project is making headlines across the state.

A dirty past

Customers of All Car Hourly Car Rentals New York travelers may be surprised to learn that nearly 45% of the land slated to be used in the Fresh Kills Park Project was originally used as a landfill area. Established in 1948, the Fresh Kills Landfill was not only New York's largest landfill, but it was also the largest landfill in the entire world. As the principal garbage dump for NYC, the landfill would see a staggering 29,000 tons of trash deposited in its midst every day. Four gigantic landfill mounds constituted the site, each containing nearly 150 million tons of solid waste.

Fresh Kills ties to the September 11th attacks

Citizens of New York City lobbied to have Fresh Kills Landfill closed at the turn of the century. Luckily, the City responded, and Fresh Kills was slated to close its doors in December of 2001. It officially received its last barge of garbage on March 22, 2001. However, dire situations related to the September 11th terrorist attacks caused Governor Pataki to amend the closing orders to Fresh Kills, reopening it for a special service. Many customers of All Car Hourly Car Rentals New York might not know this, but Fresh Kills was where the 1.2 million tons of rubble from the World Trade Centers were transported and meticulously screened through. All discernible remains were collected during the process and taken to the New York City Medical Examiners for identification and safe keeping. Once all of the debris had been search and classified, Fresh Kills was shut down for good and the debris was covered with a protective cap of soil. To this day, customers of All Car Hourly Car Rentals New York will find the area clearly marked.

Plans for the future

Plans to turn Fresh Kills into an enormous park project began after the landfill was closed in 2001. At this time, the City of New York hosted a two stage international design competition to foster the development of a master park plan for the grounds. All in all, it will take close to 30 years to design, plan and implement the winning proposal. When everything is complete, customers of All Car Hourly Car Rentals New York can expect to find a world-class park at Fresh Kills; one that will include a variety of public spaces, a plethora of sports fields and large scale public art. The park will be entirely safe for customers of All Car Hourly Car Rentals New York to visit, and for local wildlife to inhabit, thanks to ecological initiatives and a creative design plan.
