A Queens All Car Rent A Car office is proudly located just a few minutes away from Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Rego Park, so be sure to stop by before picking up, or dropping off your upcoming vehicle!
A Brief History of Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Flushing Meadows Corona Park (which is named for its location half way between Flushing and Corona, New York) hasn’t always been the home of Shea Stadium. In fact, the site was once used as a garbage dumping ground, described by author F. Scott Fitzgerald as a “valley of ashes” in his book The Great Gatsby”. Once a gigantic swampy, the Flushing Meadows Corona Park was converted into a 1,200 acre fairground during the 1930’s in preparation for the 1939 World’s Fair. The World’s Fair has held for a second time at the Flushing Meadows Corona Park in 1964 (a few of the original structures still remain inside the park, so be sure to keep and eye out for them when passing by in your upcoming Queens car rental!). The first United Nations assembled inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park between 1946 and 1950, and it wasn’t long before two major sports stadiums were erected. Shea Stadium, home to the New York Mets and the USTA National Tennis Center are both located within the park, along with a variety of cultural institutions and environmental displays. The Flushing Meadows Corona Park is by far one of the boroughs most prized attractions, so don’t forget to stop by during your upcoming trip to Queens!
The Park’s Location and Key Features
The Flushing Meadows Corona Park is shaped like an oval, stretching from Flushing Bay to the Union Turnpike. Over 124 acres of environmentally protected area can be found throughout the park including the Flushing Creek, Willow Lake and the manmade Meadow Lake. Meadow Lake covers over 84 acres and is New York City’s largest freshwater lake! Within the park you’ll find plenty of wonderful walking paths and bikeways, perfect for an afternoon of fun in the sun! If you’re traveling with children during your upcoming Queens car rental vacation, be sure to stop by the gigantic park “Playground for All Children”. This park, which was built in 1997, is a one-of-a-kind feature in New York City. Designed for both able bodied and disable children, the Playground for All Children provides kids with a safe place to have fun, so don’t forget to check it out! The Queens Wildlife Center, the Queens Museum and the New York Hall of Science are also located inside the Flushing Meadows Corona Park, along with the Unisphere and the Rocket Tower (two mementos of the 1964 World’s Fair).
Directions to the Flushing Meadow Corona Park in your Queens Car Rental
Directions to the park can often appear complicated, but it’s really not bad if you know which part of the park you’re heading to. All Car Rent A Car encourages you to utilize the following two routes:
- From the Grand Central Parkway – take Exit 9E (labeled Flushing Meadows Corona Park). Turn either left for the tennis center or right for the museum and Unisphere parking). If you’re heading to Shea Stadium, the Hall of Science or the zoo take exit 10. Another entrance is available at exit 11 (the Van Wyck Expressway) which will lead directly to the Meadow Lake parking structure.
- From the Flushing or Forest Hills Area – Take Jewel Avenue heading west and exit at the entrance to Grand Central, heading towards the Triborough Bridge. You will see and exit directing you into the Meadow Lake parking area.
