A little history

Travel to 622 E. 187th St with your Bronx car rentals to try out arguably the best bakery in the Italian bakery-laden neighbourhood. Egidio's Bakery has been around since 1912, and they still have a quiet, unassuming, neighbourhood establishment feel. It's a quiet little shop, and they have some really delicious pastries among their offerings. It is amazing how long this place has been in business and still churns out some of the most delicious pastries outside of the old country.

The menu

Once inside, you are bombarded with an amazing assortment of delights. The owner, Carmela is usually on hand and is more than happy to say hello and make you feel at home. After placing your order you can either take it to go or stick around with your Bronx car rentals and take a seat. It is great fun to see a lot of the old schoolers walk in and place their orders in Italian or broken English. When you travel with your Bronx car rentals to Egidio's Bakery, your Bronx car rentals highly recommends that you try the chocolate ring cake on the same day it's baked. The shop, housed in an old brick tenement also sells Italian ices in warmer months.

All about the cannoli

One of the major specialty pasteries at Egidios Bakery is the cannoli. Cannoli consist of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta cheese and chopped succade. They range in size from "cannulicchi", no bigger than a finger, to the fist-sized proportions typically found in Piana degli Albanesi, south of Palermo, Sicily. The cannoli sold in Italian-American bakeries today usually still contain ricotta, but mascarpone is a less common alternative. Sometimes the filling is a simple custard of sugar, milk, and cornstarch. In either case, the cream is often flavored with vanilla or orange flower water and a light amount of cinnamon. The shell is a dough made of wheat, butter, sugar and other ingredients. It is formed into an oval, wrapped around a dough ring and fried. The shells can be filled with creme by using a spoon or pastry bag. If not served quickly, the shells will lose their crisp texture.
