Egidio's Bakery

Would you like to taste some authentic Italian sweets? Bronx car rentals travelers need look no further than Egidio's Bakery in Bronx's Little Italy.

The history of this shop is as unique as the food it sells. After trouble with the law in Italy in 1909, Pasquale Egidio moved to America with his wife, Carmela, and their two children. By 1912, Pasquale convinced a wealthy uncle to back him in opening a pastry shop similar to the one owned by his parents in Italy. He and Carmela rapidly brought seven more children into the world. His favorite daughter, Annie, expected to inherit the shop upon her father's death, but her mother and brother secretly altered the will three days after her father died.

The brother who inherited the shop sold it in 1982. Although the shop was sold again in 1987, it continues to create the same high-quality, traditional Italian foods that it did from the beginning. The current owner, Carmela Lucciola, herself an Italian immigrant, acquired the store in 1996 as part of the divorce settlement from her husband. They divorced after he announced to Carmela that he was taking a vacation with his girlfriend. Carmela continues to be actively involved with running the shop and visiting with patrons.

Sweet Tooth Heaven

Rated one of New York's top 10 bakeries and restaurants, Egidio's Bakery offers enough variety to appeal to every Bronx car rentals traveler. You can sip a cappuccino or espresso while choosing among their multitude of desserts, including fruit tarts, napoleons, mixed Italian mini-cookies and cakes, biscotti, banana eclairs, and their famous cannoli. Egidio's Bakery makes their cannoli shells from a delicate pastry dough that traps air in pockets and fries up light and crunchy. Unlike the too-sweet icing sugar-based filling found in store-bought cannoli, Egidio's fills theirs with ricotta and pastry cream that delivers the traditional - and delicious - cheese flavor. Bronx car rentals travelers visiting in the summer will also want to try their Italian ices.

Open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm daily, Egidio's Bakery accepts most major credit cards. You can select your items after browsing their glass cases and have them box your snack to take with you as you go. For those in no rush, have a waiter take your order and deliver it to you at one of their charming little tables so that you can relax and listen to the long-time patrons speak Italian.

To make their customers as comfortable as possible, Egidio's Bakery is non-smoking. Reservations aren't required, but if you're coming with a large group, you may want to call ahead.
