New York Car Rental and Ed Sullivan Theater

The Ed Sullivan Theater is located on Broadway between West 53rd Street and West 54th Street in Manhattan. It was where the Ed Sullivan Show was once filmed, while it is now used for the Late Show with David Letterman, which you can catch with your New York car rental. In 1950, it became a television studio.

Explore the theater

When you visit with your New York car rental, you may learn that the theater was designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp and built by Arthur Hammerstein between 1925 and 1927. In the 1930s, it became a popular nightclub, but when CBS obtained the property, it began broadcasting from there. The theater was renamed in 1967-68 after Ed Sullivan. Several very popular shows were filmed here, including The Honeymooners, Merv Griffin Show, and the Ed Sullivan Show.

David Letterman makes a move

When you visit with your New York car rental, you may learn that the Ed Sullivan Theater was bought by CBS when David Letterman switched from NBC to CBS in 1993. Changes that were made to the theater are reversible in order to preserve the architectural integrity of the landmark. It has also been retrofitted in order to broadcast in high definition.

Learn a bit about CBS

CBS, or Columbia Broadcasting System, is a network of television and radio stations across the United States. Its creation dates back to 1927 in Chicago as a radio station as the United Independent Broadcasters. Soon it was sold to William S. Paley, son of a Philadelphia cigar manufacturer. At this time, the name was changed to CBS. It soon established itself as the home of many of the most popular musical and comedy stars in radio, including Bing Crosby, George Burns, and Edward Murrow. It also gained infamy in 1938 when Orson Welles and Mercury Theater broadcast an adaptation of H.G. Wells` The War of the Worlds, which had many listeners panicking that the world was being attacked by aliens.

The move to television was a little slower. They only had one station in 1950. But as television began to take over, CBS gained ground. They brought shows like the Smothers Brothers, All in the Family, and M*A*S*H to viewers. CBS was the first working color television station, but lost out to RCA because their system was incompatible with their black-and-white sets. Some of the shows they currently carry include CSI, Survivor, NCIS, and NUMB3RS, which you might be familiar with when you visit with your New York car rental.
