A little history

When you travel with your rent a car in Staten Island to the College of Staten Island you will find that the location has a long and vibrant history waiting for it to be discovered. Richmond College was opened in 1965 but after New York City's financial crisis Richmond College was being threatened with closure. On the other end the much older Staten Island Community College was opened in 1956 and because of its status as a community college, received state support. The merger between the two institutions worked out perfectly since the Staten Island Community College offered two year degrees, while Richmond College was an "upper divisional" college that offered degrees to those in their third and fourth years of schooling. The College of Staten Island was officially established in 1976 from the merger of Richmond College and Staten Island Community College. The merger was overseen by the first president of the college, Dr. Edmond Volpe, an American literature scholar, retired in 1994, after having successfully handled the merger of the two colleges and the unification of the two campuses.

The high school has since moved off-site to a new, purpose-built facility. Twenty one new and renovated neo-Georgian buildings serve as classrooms, laboratories, facilities buildings and offices.
