A small piece of history

The Old Quaker Meeting House was built in 1694, and is the oldest house of worship in the city, and even one of the oldest continuously active sites of religious activity in the western hemisphere. There is also the John Bowne House, which was built around 1661, and is now a museum. This house was a stop on the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. Finally, the Lewis H. Latimer House was built in 1887-1889 and was where the inventor Lewis Latimer lived from 1903-1928. It is now a museum of Latimer’s work.
