Williamsburg

When you are here with your NYC car rental, you will find Williamsburg is an up-and-coming area. It borders Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and the East River. There are many diverse influences in the city, but mainly Germans, Hasidic Jews, Italians, Puerto Rican, and Dominican influences. The area has also been popular with young people moving to the city, and a hub for indie rock and hipster culture.

Williamsburg in the past

The area that is now Williamsburg was long home to Native Americans in the area. In 1638, the Dutch West India Company purchased land from the Natives and chartered the town in 1661. At the time, it was often called Bushwick. Farmers and gardeners lived in the area and would go to the shores to sell their products. By 1855, the city was annexed to Brooklyn, which later became part of New York City. The history of the area really began to change with the construction and opening of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903. The community was opened to thousands of immigrants and second generation Americans that were looking to escape the crowded slums. When you are here with your rental car in NYC, you may learn that the area sagged after World War II, and the area slipped into an era when it was known for its crime and social ills. However, there is no need to worry when you are here today because it is a safe and thriving community.
