New York Car Rentals and Carroll Gardens Brooklyn
Carroll Gardens is a neighborhood in Brooklyn. The first thing you will notice as you drive in with your New York car rental are the brownstone facades. Carroll Gardens is an urban variation of the 19th century row house, created by Richard Butts. Butts created broad spaces between the houses, creating streets with a normal width, but with deep gardens on each side. The area was developed between 1869 and 1884, and it still has that charming feel from that time.
As you explore Carroll Gardens with your New York car rental, you will discover that the area was named after Charles Carroll, a Revolutionary War veteran who was the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence. The neighborhood was originally settled b Irish immigrants to the area in the early 19th century before the area was recreated by Richard Butts. Later, Italian immigrants came to the area to influence the shipping industry in an area that was a little slower-paced. Today, Italian conversations can still be heard on the street as there is still a vibrant community here. A number of different immigrant groups have populated the area over the years, making it a charming mix of old and new.
Interesting Fact
Did you know that the area was involved in mafia activity in the past? In 1918 Al Capone's marriage ceremony took place at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church on Court Street. It is also said that Gowanus Canal, a waterway that separates Carroll Gardens from Park Slope, may hold many answers to some past mob disappearances. There are many interesting secrets to be discovered when you visit with your New York car rental.
New Things to Discover
From the boundary with Cobble Hills at Degraw and Boerum Hill at Warren down to Hamilton Avenue and Red Hook, Carroll Gardens is a mecca of stores, cafes, boutiques, and antique shops that you can't find anywhere else. Many of these are independently owned and have been in the family for a number of years. If you head down to Carroll Park with your New York car rental, you may find some people playing a game of bocci ball on the lawn, and kids playing on the playground.
If you take a trip down to the water with your New York car rental, you will come across the Columbia Street Water Front District. This area is undergoing a revival, with many new restaurants, bakeries, and bistros that are bringing more people back to the area. There is also talk of renovating the pier so that cruise ships can dock at a terminal and bring more people here.
Carroll Gardens is a very interesting place to visit with your New York car rental because of the combination of old and new that come together so well. You are sure to discover an unknown store or restaurant here that few people who come from outside the area will know about. This community is a gem in Brooklyn and not to be missed.
