New York is known as being one of the largest culture centres in the world. That's why you can't spend a car rental New York vacation without checking out the most legendary cultural centre, Carnegie Hall.

What is Carnegie Hall?

Carnegie Hall is one of the most famous concert halls in the world, located in New York City at Seventh Avenue and Fifty Seventh Street. The Hall opened in 1891 to a full house, and continues to do so today. Over the last century many world-renowned artists have performed at the Hall including Peter Tchaikovsky, Igor Stravinsky, and Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin.

Carnegie's History

After the Civil War America became transfixed with music and New Yorkers were no exception. Since New York did not have a concert hall at the time, Andrew Carnegie, businessman and philanthropist, saw the need for one and donated the funds to get New York's first concert hall built. Building began in 1890 and took seven years before it was completed. The architecture focused on having impeccable acoustics, which was successfully achieved. Carnegie's style is reminiscent of the Victorian era, chosen for its elegant look and feel. The foyer is dressed marble with great slanting arches in the ceiling and the doors. In the corners of the foyer there are columns with intricate carvings. This detailing can even be seen on the exterior of the building as you drive by in your car rental in New York.

After years of hard work, on May 5, 1891, Carnegie Hall hosted its first performer. In true Carnegie fashion, the first performer to grace the stage was none other than the great Tchaikovsky. The bar had been set, and anyone who was to follow had to be the best of the best.
