New York Rental Car and Bedford Stuyvesent Historic District, Brooklyn
Imagine a place in New York where you could go to learn about its early history and enjoy its place in the media. Imagine going to a place where there have been so many ethnic changes throughout the years that there is a huge variety of people all with different cultural backgrounds and stories to tell. Are you wondering what place this is, New York car rental customers? It is the Bedford Stuyvesent Historic District in Brooklyn, NY. This area that most people refer to as “Bed-Stuy” is part of the Brooklyn Community Board 3, Board 8 and Board 16. The district is outlined by Flushing Avenue, the Eastern Parkway and Van Sinderen Avenue. This district has been a main cultural gathering area for many African Americans that reside in Brooklyn. They have all been coming here ever since the 1930s when they were forced to leave Harlem because of overcrowding. Bedford-Stuyvesent is made up of four different regions including Ocean Hill, Bedford, Stuyvesent Heights and Weeksville. There is so much history and culture linked to this district that it would be a shame to miss out on it on your upcoming New York car rental vacation.
A step back in time
Going back to when it all began, the name of the town comes from the Village of Bedford and Stuyvesent Heights. Stuyvesent actually refers to Peter Stuyvesent who was the last governor of New Netherland. Bedford came about because it was the first settlement that could be found to the east of Brooklyn on the ferry road. The area of Bedford was soon turned into a railroad station because of the building of the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad in 1832. Weeksville was established in Bedford as one of the older African American communities. Most of this district is now a historical site and Ocean Hill (the 4th section of the district) is mainly residential. Come check it out on your New York car rental trip.
Maybe you could be famous
The district of Bedford Stuyvesent has been very popular in the media over the years. It is known to have a culture and uniqueness that overflows past the city of New York. The town is mentioned in the song “You May Be Right” by Billy Joel. It has also been featured in numerous films, including Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” and “Crooklyn”. There have also been segments filmed here for the television sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris”.
