The Bayside Historical Society was founded in 1964 to collect, preserve and disseminate information concerning the history of Bayside, Queens, and its adjacent communities. The society works to advocate for preservation and protection of its most historic structures and distinctive neighborhoods through the land marking process and to strive to develop a broad constituency of like-minded preservation and educational organizations to protect the historic integrity of the communities and collections.

A little history

The Bayside Historical Society was made possible by the coming together of several committees initiated by its founder, Joseph H. Brown. His aims were the beautification and protection of the environment and community in which he lived, and awakening civic pride in Bayside long history. In 1964, with Brown leadership, the Bayside Historical Society was officially founded by a small group of like-minded residents with three goals: The preservation and restoration of the Lawrence Family Cemetery, Alley Pond and Fort Totten. Fort Totten

The Officer's Club of Fort Totten, known as "the Castle," is home to the Bayside Historical Society, which hosts events, historic exhibitions and cultural programs.The Fort is a New York City Historic District and the Club a Designated Landmark. The building was designed by General Robert E. Lee during the pre - Civil War The building was designed in the neo-Gothic style popular at the time. The building design was based on a Castle in part because this symbol had long been identified with Army engineers.

Celebrating the past

The Bayside Historical Society hosts several events in the amazing Fort Totten. A current exhibit is the Woman of Bayside? Opening May 2 at 2 pm, the exhibit pays tribute to women who have made their mark on the Bayside community throughout history. Featuring both contemporary women and those of the past, The Women of Bayside showcases the achievements of women pioneers. There will be a performance by Belt Blvd, and a cappella ensemble from Bayside High School. Light refreshments will also be served. All though admission is free, there is a $5 suggested donation.
