A long history

The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum was once the residence and estate of Robert and Marie Lorillard Bartow. When you visit with your 15 passenger rental van, you will learn that they occupied the area as far back as 1654. The Lords of the Manor of Pelham than owned and enlarged the house. It was remodelled into the Federal style. The house that you currently see when you visit was built between 1836 and 1842. Ownership passed between the two families, the Bartows and Pells, until the city bought the property in 1888. The house was largely unused for a long time, until the International Garden Club used the grounds for their formal gardens. Since then, the home was preserved and restored. It was officially opened as a museum in 1946 and exemplifies life in the area in the early 19th century.
