The story of the Moon for the Misbegotten begins in early September 1923 in a Connecticut house with three main characters: A domineering Irish woman with a quick tongue Josie, the tenant farmer and her father Phil Hogan, and Hogan's landlord and drinking companion James Tyrone, Jr. During one of their drinking sessions, Tyrone jokingly threatens to sell his land and evict Hogan which leads Hogan to make a scheme involving taking advantage of the mutual affection between his daughter and Tyrone.
