All Car Rent A Car has taken the time to compile an interesting overview on some of the busiest New York City tunnels, so please feel free to take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these heavily traveled transportation routes!

The Queens Midtown Tunnel

The Queens Midtown Tunnel is one of the busiest travel routes in all of New York City. Opened in 1940 this tunnel was created to help relieve the congestion found on the Big Apple's East River Bridges. Back in the day the Queens Midtown Tunnel was a state-of-the-art creation designed and engineered by Ole Singstad. Building the Queens Midtown Tunnel wasn't an easy task to tackle mind you; extensive excavation of rocking matter created less than ideal working conditions for builders and designers. So if you're planning on traveling between Midtown Manhattan and Queens be sure to check out the Queens Midtown Tunnel in your New York cheap car rental. This tunnel connects the attractive residential area of Murray Hill in Manhattan to the historic 19th century ferry transfer point located at Hunters Point in Long Island City, Queens. It will cost you approximately $3.50 to travel through the Queens Midtown Tunnel in your New York cheap car rental.

The Lincoln Tunnel

The Lincoln Tunnel connects Midtown Manhattan to central New Jersey thanks to the world's only three-tubed underwater vehicular passageway. The three tubes of the Lincoln Tunnel combine to produce six lanes of traffic, creating plenty of space for rush hour traffic. If you're planning on leaving your New York cheap car rental at home at taking public transportation to New Jersey, make sure to catch a commuter bus that utilizes the Lincoln Tunnel. During rush hour traffic an exclusive bus lane is opened inside the Lincoln Tunnel resulting in quick and efficient public transit. It will cost you approximately $6.00 to use the Lincoln Tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey in your New York cheap car rental.

The Holland Tunnel

The Holland Tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey is considered to be an outstanding achievement in the field of engineering. Opened in 1927 the Holland Tunnel was the first vehicular tunnel to travel beneath the depth of the Hudson River. With nine lanes the Holland Tunnel, named after Clifford M. Holland, is an amazing piece of New York City; in fact, in 1984 the Holland Tunnel was actually cited as a National Historic Civil and Mechanical Engineering Landmark! The Holland Tunnel is made up of over 3.1 million ceiling tiles and 2.9 million wall tiles, creating a watertight roadway between Jersey and Midtown. If you're traveling from Manhattan to New Jersey don't expect to pay a toll, but you will need to pay $6.00 to return to Midtown.

The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel is the best way to get from Wall Street to Southwestern Brooklyn in your New York cheap car rental. Opened in 1950 the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was once the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in all of North America. Construction on this massive tunnel commenced in 1940, but work was delayed on the structure for close to a decade due to immense material shortages during the Second World War. When the Brooklyn Battery passageway finally opened in 1950 two diverse neighborhoods were connected for eternity; on the Brooklyn side of the tunnel you'll find beautiful brownstone communities like Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. At the Manhattan end of the tunnel you'll come face to face with the economic center of the world including Wall Street, the South Street Seaport and the World Trade Center site. It will cost you $3.50 to travel on the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel one way.
